Putting The Marks Into Marxism By The Way Of Kwanza And Other Mishegas

I am usually one who admires freedom of speech and other people’s opinions, particularly those of columnists, but not the type are that so wishy-washy in terms of thinking. The writers I truly disdain are the ones who are given the freedom to write whatever they choose (within reason or whatever their editor approves) and come off sounding Ku Klux Klan-like, elitist, extremist in views of the world and then I wonder after all that, where the writer received their education.

It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve felt like this, as I sometimes do bust out in an occasional rant and rave session and after it’s all said and done, I just wonder what the heck set me off to begin with.

This writer I am speaking about is none other than Niles Bugle opinion columnist Morgan Dubiel has gone too far in his column about Christmas. In his column he suggests through a Jewish author that Hanukkah isn’t that much of a holiday. That’s partially true.

Sure it’s not like the high holy days like Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, but it signifies the miracle that a tin of oil lasted for eight days during the Macabee war. I doubt Mr. Dubiel would know this, since he probably doesn’t celebrate the holiday and had to use an author that a definite Jewish-sounding name to explain Hanukkah in his column, that’s rather obvious.

Non-Jews wouldn’t know this. Why else would he use a passage from a book written by a Jew to explain it?

Then there’s this bit about Christmas being for JUST Christians; since when? Funny thing about Christmas is that it is indeed not only a Christian holiday like he implies. In fact, many Christians have moved away from the very meaning of Christmas and have sought out their own meaning of the holiday. In the meantime, other religions celebrate Christmas in their own way; religions like Catholics, Protestants, Lutherans, Baptists, United Methodists, Masons and many other religious sects. No, Mr. Dubiel, plenty of folks do celebrate Christmas and not just the Christians as you imply so firmly.

As for Kwanzaa being a Marxist holiday, that’s hypocritical; considering that nearly a month ago Mr. Dubiel held such high praise for the late civil rights activist Rosa Parks and how much she did to empower the civil rights movement for black people.

By definition, a Marxist is someone who is an extreme radical or revolutionary. So the cultural holiday of Kwanzaa, which is celebrated from December 26 to January 1, is a Marxist holiday, eh? Wouldn’t that make Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus Christ all Marxists then? After all, each was an extreme radical commie-pinko in their own time.

Mr. Dubiel also suggests that "Kwanzaa like its political basis is largely a failure and ignored." Well, golly gee, Mr. Dubiel, it’s a little unfair to compare a holiday that was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga to centuries-old holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah when it’s only been celebrated for 39 years! I doubt you even celebrate Kwanzaa, so how the heck would you even know if it’s a failure? Pretty hypocritical of you!

Thank goodness Mr. Dubiel didn’t suggest that Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan were lesbian lovers…
