"In terms of offending, I could give two-shits..." Julie Kaiference
Political correctness is stupid, absolutely insane, in terms people’s expectations and bombastic demands on traditions that have forever dotted our United States; it’s almost as if guilt plays a tremendous role in making up minds, not intelligence nor practicality. And here I thought guilt came directly from Catholic or Jewish mindsets!
Take for example the most recent hit on college and high school sports teams within the last 10 years that have taken hits by guilty Caucasians and others for the constant mantra of “Change the team name because you’re being unfair to Native American Indians."
It sounds all well and good, except now it’s going a little too far. The Miami Hurricanes, well known in collegiate football for over five decades, is being asked to change their name due to the mere fact that the word “hurricane” is in their name and it seems to some that what with the recent heavy damage & death tolls recent hurricanes have caused, it would seem to the politically correct crowd that it’s time for a name change.
The trouble with doing that, however, is like taking a step backward in time. It’s like calling everyone who ever participated in minstrel shows back at the turn of the century through the early 1920s, bigots. They weren’t; it was part of the entertainment industry, blackface was commonplace back then.
And it also reminds me of people that build new homes in an existing neighborhood that was once considered a “bad area” and find a tried-and-true community landmark, like say a mission that helps the homeless and want it removed, for fear their real estate will go down in value.
Political correctness parallels revisionism, which is commonplace these days. Historians & the KKK are blatant revisionists, re-writing history for their purposes.
Funnily enough, folks who make the news (not the reporters) in the press who’ve made themselves look bad by stating something dumb or crazy, always feel as if they’ve been taken out of context or were misunderstood. They take it upon themselves to correct what they meant, the usual line being well, “That’s not what I said.” Minister Louis Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson & a host of others pull that same stunt time after time after time.
Well, there should be an easy way to solve it; why not just play the audio tape or the film back or show the written notes on live television during a news broadcast and not during the February-November sweeps either! That way, it can be shown who was in the wrong after all and clear the air once and for all.
But back to the matter at hand; changing sports teams names; should they be changed or shouldn’t they? How terribly offensive is it to use the name of an Indian, be it simple or complex? Was it really so bad that the high school were I attended and graduated from was celebrating Native Americans in their generic team name “Niles West Indians,” but caved to pressure and changed their name to “Wolves”?
Was it so wrong for a high school to be celebrating the fact that Native American Indians (the Potawomi) once dwelled in the area now known as Skokie, where their high school is also situated? Is it really so bad that collegiate sports teams uses Native American Indian nicknames such as “Braves,” “Warriors,” “Chiefs,” “Redskins,” or “Indians”?
And if high school & college teams have to change their names, why not the major leagues like baseball (Cleveland Indians & Atlanta Braves), football (Washington Redskins), basketball (Golden State Warriors) and hockey (Chicago Blackhawks) as well? But is it really an insult or is more of an honor?
In that same vein, how is it that it’s okay for blacks, pardon me, people of color to call other blacks "niggers" but when a Caucasian uses the word, it’s considered bigotry? How is that any different from offending anyone else? I think it’s called double-speak.
At the same token (no pun intended), isn’t that a little unfair to animal lovers to have animal names used for teams? Isn’t that abusive? How long will it take for those same folks who are complaining about Native American Indian names being used for teams to start griping that using animal names such as “bears” or “wolves” offends those that worship the animal gods as well?
And then, there are teams that use human names like the Milwaukee Brewers, which is offensive to alcoholics, if you slip up and call them the Milwaukee Drunkards! Then there’s the Green Bay Packers; I mean what are they packing anyway, besides meat, fish, fudge and guns?
Catch my drift?
And then it will only get worse before it gets better, as PETA (People (For The) Ethical Treatment (of) Animals) will probably get itself involved with the matter and then the lawsuits will follow and before long, that will really fuck things up and then after a while it’s going to really messy and no one is going to want to step on anybody’s toes.
Ah well, this is what we get for living in America, the home of the brave…ooops sorry, no offense to all the Native American Indians, not from the Indians from India reading this. I meant man-made everything & land of the lawsuit.
There! That ought to please everyone…I hope.
